Overview

Launched in 2023 by MSC Group, Explora Journeys is the most significant new entrant to the luxury small-ship market in a decade. The line was designed from the beginning to feel like a boutique hotel — and unlike most cruise lines that borrow hotel language for marketing purposes, Explora actually hired hotel designers to build the ships.

The result is a cruise experience that systematically removes what most travelers dislike about cruising — the crowds, the commercial energy, the rigid schedule — and replaces it with space, calm, and genuine quality. For first-time luxury cruisers, it's the most likely line to change a skeptic's mind.

The ships

Explora I and II are currently sailing, with four more ships planned through 2028. Each carries ~900 guests in 461 ocean-facing suites — a ratio that keeps the ship feeling spacious even at full occupancy. The design emphasizes open, social-but-quiet spaces: multiple pool decks, a large spa, library, and a dozen lounge areas of varying sizes and energy.

Notably absent: casinos, duty-free shopping corridors, and onboard entertainment that requires selling you something. The revenue model is fare-based, which changes the entire design logic of the ship.

Dining

Nine restaurants, all fully included. The range covers Japanese, Mediterranean, French bistro, seafood grill, casual café, and more — each with a distinct menu and kitchen. Food quality is consistently strong across venues, and the wine and spirits list (also included, no daily limit) supports serious dining rather than discouraging it.
